Healthgrades 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award

Overland Park, Kan.HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s largest healthcare provider, announced today that five of its hospitals have been recognized with 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Awards™ by Healthgrades, the #1 site Americans use when searching for a doctor or hospital. Research Medical Center, Centerpoint Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center, Lee’s Summit Medical Center, and Belton Regional Medical Center have earned the award. These achievements reflect HCA Midwest Health’s clear commitment to safe, patient-centered care and puts the hospitals in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety. HCA Midwest Health is part of HCA Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services.

Earlier this year, Centerpoint Medical Center was one of 49 HCA hospitals named to the 2025 Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals list for being within the top 5% of hospitals in the country for clinical excellence. It is the hospital’s fifth consecutive year to be recognized with this achievement, which is based exclusively on patient outcomes.

“Patient safety is the cornerstone of our mission at HCA Midwest Health," said President Keith Zimmerman. "Our hospitals and healthcare professionals continually set the standard for clinical excellence, going above and beyond to deliver compassionate care to every patient we serve. It is an honor to be named among the nation’s top hospitals for exceptional, patient-centered care.”

“At HCA Midwest Health, our hospitals are committed to achieving superior clinical outcomes through evidence-based care and innovation," said Chief Medical Officer Eric Benink, MD. "Thanks to our dedicated healthcare teams, our facilities continue to be recognized as leading destinations in the region for high-quality, compassionate, and safe patient care."

HCA Healthcare’s Patient Safety Organization (PSO), established more than a decade ago, is dedicated to improving patient safety and the quality of healthcare delivery by partnering with HCA Healthcare facilities to build systems, refine processes and foster a culture of safety. Intentionally focusing on protecting conversations around patient safety, the PSO holds an annual, enterprise-wide “Safe Table” campaign to encourage all colleagues to share concerns and ideas related to the delivery of safe, quality care.

HCA Midwest Health’s hospital achievements are based solely on patient outcomes. To determine the top-performing hospitals for patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades’ analysis revealed significant performance gaps between the nation’s highest- and lowest-achieving facilities, making it increasingly important for consumers to seek care at a hospital with top safety ratings. From 2021-2023, 173,280 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four patient safety indicators accounting for nearly 76% of these incidents. * The annual study found that patients treated in hospitals that received the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital falls resulting in fracture (54% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 55% less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 69% less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (72% less likely)

“As a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient, HCA Midwest Health hospitals consistently put the well-being of their patients and staff at the forefront, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Debra Gradick, MD FACEP, senior physician consultant at Healthgrades. “We commend Research Medical Center, Centerpoint Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center, Lee’s Summit Medical Center, and Belton Regional Medical Center for providing consistently exceptional care while preventing serious injuries, giving patients their best chance of a seamless recovery.”
