Comprehensive, compassionate surgical care
We believe there's no such thing as "routine" surgery. That's why we encourage patients to work with their primary care providers to find surgeons with the training, experience and bedside manner that meets their needs. We also help patients seeking second opinions.
Our surgery teams take the time to answer any questions and address any concerns of patients and family members. We offer advice on preparing for surgery, what to expect during treatment and the best ways to make fast, full recoveries, which may include physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Our surgical specialties
In addition to the general surgical procedures that all of our hospitals provide and the emergency surgeries performed in our 11 emergency rooms (ERs), we offer a wide range of specialized procedures.
Our caring and knowledgeable bariatric surgery teams offer a wide range of bariatric procedures to qualified candidates seeking sustained weight loss solutions. Through weight loss procedures, such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, we can surgically treat obesity and help reduce weight-related health issues.
Breast surgery is often the most effective treatment option for the removal of breast cancer. Our breast surgeons are experts in removing malignant tumors and tissues of the breast.
While breast surgery can be lifesaving, it can also leave visible scarring. These surgical scars can be painful reminders of cancer and treatment for many women, causing feelings of self-consciousness about their bodies. Our surgeons perform several types of advanced breast cancer surgeries to address these issues, including hidden scar breast cancer surgery, lumpectomy and mastectomy.
Ear, nose and throat surgery
Many of our hospitals provide expert ear, nose and throat (ENT) care from dedicated and experienced otolaryngology specialists. From chronic sinus problems to tonsillitis, our specialists offer surgical and nonsurgical treatments to help patients experiencing a wide range of ENT conditions.
The board-certified ophthalmologists at our hospitals offer a wide range of services to promote eye health. We specialize in medical and surgical treatments for eye disease and injury, including advanced cataract removal and glaucoma treatment.
Gastrointestinal and hernia surgery
We offer high-quality gastrointestinal care with teams made up of digestive specialists and gastroenterologists at each of our hospitals. Our multidisciplinary specialists help patients experiencing digestive issues and conditions with a range of surgical treatments, including gallbladder, esophageal and colorectal procedures.
We also offer personalized treatment plans and multidisciplinary care for all types of hernias. Our multidisciplinary treatment team includes board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeons who specialize in all types of hernia repair, including laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery.
The women's care programs offered at our hospitals provide advanced surgical procedures to treat a range of gynecologic conditions, such as pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Our skilled gynecologists offer surgeries, such as fibroid removal and hysterectomy. We also provide surgical treatments for conditions that may contribute to a woman's fertility, such as endometriosis. In addition to traditional gynecologic surgery, we perform minimally invasive robot-assisted surgeries whenever possible.
Heart and vascular surgery
Our hospitals have dedicated cardiology programs made up of heart and vascular experts. We offer expert screening services and treat conditions, such as congestive heart failure and heart attacks, with surgical interventions when needed. Our experienced cardiovascular surgeons perform heart surgeries and vascular procedures to treat conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, often using minimally invasive techniques.
Our neurosurgeons offer a range of advanced procedures to treat brain and nervous system conditions. The multidisciplinary specialists in our neurological program work together to surgically treat conditions, such as cerebral aneurysm, brain tumor and stroke.
In addition to neurosurgery, we offer radiosurgery, a noninvasive alternative to surgery, for patients with neurological conditions. Radiosurgery is highly effective and offers several advantages over conventional neurosurgery and other forms of stereotactic radiosurgery, including reduced risk of complications.
The specialists in our orthopedic program provide a wide range of orthopedic surgeries and use minimally invasive techniques, including robotic surgery, whenever possible. Some of the orthopedic surgeries we offer include:

In addition to noninvasive therapies and treatments, our skilled surgical oncologists offer a range of procedures to treat various types of cancer.
Through The Transplant Institute at Research Medical Center, we offer a nationally recognized kidney transplant program. We also offer the Kansas City region's only simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplant procedure. Our dedicated transplant unit serves the entire region, including the Kansas City area, Joplin, Springfield, St. Joseph, Wichita and Topeka. We are renowned for providing advanced transplant services, including live donor transplants.
The specialists at our hospitals' dedicated urological programs offer a wide range of procedures to treat conditions of the prostate, kidneys and bladder. Some of the procedures we offer include cystectomy (partial or total removal of the bladder) and nephrectomy (total or partial removal of the kidney).
Most of our hospitals offer robot-assisted surgeries for urological, gynecological, orthopedic and general procedures. With robotic surgical systems, we can perform a complex operation with a single incision.
In addition to the advantages that robotic surgery offers surgeons, including greater precision and guidance, robot-assisted surgery offers many benefits to patients compared to traditional surgery, including:
- Faster recovery times
- Less blood loss
