Shoulder conditions we treat

When physical therapy, medicine and noninvasive care cannot relieve your shoulder pain, shoulder replacement surgery may be a solution. To restore joint health and shoulder function, we use minimally invasive procedures whenever possible. The following conditions and similar injuries and chronic issues may require shoulder replacement surgery.

Shoulder fractures

Injury or trauma can cause fractures of the humerus (the long bone in the upper arm) or the glenoid (the socket of the ball-and-socket joint). Most shoulder fractures can be treated without surgery, but surgery may be the best option if fractures are unlikely to heal.

Shoulder arthritis

Shoulder arthritis occurs when cartilage wears down on the ball and/or socket sides of the shoulder joint. When the cartilage inside the shoulder joint is damaged, it can cause pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion.

Shoulder arthritis pain can be reduced by nonoperative treatments, including physical therapy and pain management services. If those treatments do not relieve pain and improve range of motion, shoulder replacement surgery may provide relief.

Wear and tear of the shoulder

Aging and repeated overhead activities can lead to tears of the rotator cuff tendon and rotator cuff disease. For patients experiencing ongoing shoulder pain due to wear and tear, surgery may provide relief and increase functionality.

Candidates for shoulder replacement surgery

If you are experiencing a limited range of motion or severe shoulder pain, you may be a candidate for shoulder replacement surgery. Schedule an appointment with one of our joint experts if you:

  • Cannot move your arms above your head or have a limited range of motion
  • Experience shoulder pain or stiffness that interferes with your daily life
  • Have pain that wakes you up from sleep
  • Have tried nonsurgical treatments, such as medicine, physical therapy and injections, without success

Shoulder replacement surgery

Shoulder replacement surgery, or shoulder arthroplasty, involves removing damaged areas of the shoulder and replacing them with a customized, prosthetic ball-and-socket device.

HCA Midwest Health hospitals offer advanced shoulder replacement procedures from expert orthopedic shoulder surgeons. After surgery, we provide inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services to help patients make a full recovery.

Types of shoulder replacement surgery

In addition to minimally invasive shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder manipulation, which is used to treat frozen shoulder, our hospitals offer a wide range of shoulder replacement surgeries, including:

  • Total shoulder replacement (a procedure that involves replacing the ball of the arm bone and shoulder blade socket with prosthetics)
  • Partial shoulder replacement (a procedure used when the shoulder socket is in good condition and only the ball part of the joint needs to be replaced)
  • Reverse shoulder replacement (a procedure in which the ball-and-socket are placed in a reverse position)
  • Shoulder replacement revision (a procedure performed to correct issues and relieve pain from a previous shoulder replacement surgery)
