Prostate cancer risk factors

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is more common in men who are 65 years old and older. It is also more common in Black men than white men. Other factors that may increase your chance of prostate cancer include:

  • A high-fat diet
  • Family history of prostate cancer, especially father or brother
  • Family history of prostate cancer diagnosed at a young age

Prostate cancer symptoms

Early warning signs of prostate cancer can be rare. Sometimes, men experience symptoms before being diagnosed. The severity of symptoms depends on how advanced the cancer is and the location of cancer in the prostate. The most common symptoms of prostate cancer are:

  • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Difficulty having an erection
  • Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs
  • Not able to urinate
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
