Addiction can have a tremendous impact on your health, particularly during pregnancy. Our goal is to help families find the necessary treatment to fully recover and enjoy healthy lives.
Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS)
Your baby can develop NAS if you take opioids during pregnancy. While in the womb, the baby becomes addicted to the drugs that are being passed through your bloodstream. They then go through withdrawal after being born. Babies with NAS are more likely to experience serious complications, including:
- Breathing issues
- Feeding problems
- Low birthweight
- Seizures
Diagnosis services for NAS
Our dedicated and experienced neonatologists pay close attention to your newborn, looking for different signs or symptoms of NAS. If our doctors suspect NAS, they may use the following to confirm a diagnosis:
- Neonatal abstinence scoring
- Meconium testing
- Urine testing
Treatment options for NAS
Our team has your baby’s best interests at heart. Depending on your child’s physical needs, the doctor may prescribe medication, administer fluids intravenously or have the baby drink special, high-calorie formula. It’s important to note that NAS can last anywhere from one week to six months after birth.
