PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. 


Goals

The goal of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Overland Park Regional Medical Center is to provide a comprehensive experience that emphasizes the development of advanced pharmaceutical care. After an initial orientation to the department, the resident begins a series of concentrated and longitudinal learning activities designed to meet the goals and objectives of the OPRMC residency program. The program aims to develop the resident into a competent and confident practitioner in:

  • Advancing practice and optimizing patient care
  • Developing leadership and management skills
  • Teaching, education, and the dissemination of knowledge

Additional learning experiences

  • Teaching Certificate Program in conjunction with the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Pharmacy.
  • Precepting pharmacy students – OPRMC has affiliations with two schools of pharmacy (University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Pharmacy and the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy)
  • Completion of Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support training and certification
  • Staffing
    • Weekends - every other weekend in an operational or clinical role
      • Residents are eligible for a compensatory day off following a staffing weekend
    • Holidays - residents are required to staff two holidays during the year
  • Research Project
  • Medication Safety Management

Length of Program: 12 months (starting end of June)

Number of Positions: 2 PGY1 positions

Accreditation Status: Candidate

Requirements

  • Hold a degree from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education accredited school of pharmacy
  • Possess a Kansas pharmacist license within 90 days of beginning of the residency year

Application process

Overland Park Regional Medical Center will manage the application process for its pharmacy residency programs through ASHP's PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application) process. Candidates must submit the following materials through PhORCAS by January 3rd:

  • Letter of Intent
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Three completed reference forms
  • College transcripts

All completed applications will be reviewed and the most qualified applicants will be invited for on-site interviews in late January and February.
