Welcome from our program director
Welcome and thank you for taking the time to learn about the Menorah Bariatric and Foregut surgery program here in Overland Park, Kansas. We are very proud of our program and all who have been a part of it over the years. The fellowship first began at Menorah Medical Center in 2017 taking two fellows every year which has continued to today. We are a busy fellowship and our case numbers recorded by our fellows don’t lie! We do every type of bariatric surgery, revisional surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy as well a primary and revisional foregut surgery. We are a leader in the region in these surgeries and a main referral center in the Midwest.
Our goal is to train our fellows to be leaders in bariatric and foregut surgery. When our fellows leave here they are experts in what they do. I hope you take a strong look at our program and what we have to offer.
Sincerely,
Nicole Fearing, MD, FACS, FASMBS
Program overview
Fellows will gain experience with primary bariatric procedures such as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, RYGB, Duodenal Switch, complex revisional procedures such as Band to Sleeve, RYGB or DS, Sleeve to RYGB or DS, RYGB to DS. They are also trained in non-surgical weight loss procedures, including the latest in endoscopic procedures such as Gastric Balloon, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, Endoscopic pouch revision. Fellows are also involved in complex foregut cases such as Heller Myotomies, Para-esophageal hernias, Nissen Fundoplication. Fellows are trained in advanced endoscopy, as well as Manometry and pH Bravo readings.
Fellows are intimately involved in the preoperative and postoperative care of the patient through clinics, call and surgery. Fellows cover bariatric call but also take two to three days of paid general surgery call per month. No trauma calls. Both facilities have a General Surgery Residency program. Fellows will work closely with residents. Our program has a fellowship curriculum in place that is followed throughout the year.
Additionally, they will develop an understanding of how to manage and perform clinical research. There is an expectation they present at national meetings. Each fellow will attend at least one national meeting per year plus any available fellows' courses. Fellows run bariatric journal club that involves multiple fellows from years past. They also work to create one support group per year.
We are interested in fellows who want to learn primary and complex bariatric surgery in a program that does a large amount of anastamotic cases. We feel very strongly that our fellows will be experienced in the whole realm of bariatric surgery when they finish and will be leading experts where ever they go.
Division of time for the program is 90% of time spent in clinical activity and 10% of time spent in research.
