At the HCA Midwest Health Heart and Vascular Institute we offer comprehensive, patient-centered care for coronary artery disease. From prevention to treatment, and mild to severe disease, our team of experienced cardiologists offer the latest technology and therapies to help improve your quality of life.

Benefits of the HCA Midwest Health Heart and Vascular Institute

  • A team approach to coronary heart disease treatment – Our team consists of highly-skilled surgeons, interventional cardiologists, cardiologists, nurses and technicians who work together to develop the optimal treatment plan for each and every patient.
  • Leading-edge procedures – We offer minimally invasive procedures and provide treatment options to people who may have previously been told surgery was too risky.
  • Advanced technology – We offer robotic-assisted coronary angioplasty at Overland Park Regional Medical Center for increased precision.
  • Pioneers in complex cases – Our interventional cardiologists performed the first bi Impella protected percutaneous coronary intervention in the KC region, giving people options who were previously deemed too risky for minimally invasive, non-surgical options.

What is coronary artery disease?

The coronary arteries bring oxygen-rich blood to the heart. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the narrowing of these arteries due to atherosclerosis (fatty plaque buildup that hardens overtime). This can obstruct blood flow to your heart and cause tissue damage.

CAD can cause angina (chest pain), lead to a heart attack and can also cause the heart muscle to weaken leading to heart failure and arrhythmias.

Coronary heart disease symptoms

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Pain that can spread to the arms or jaw
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Heart attack

Am I at risk for coronary artery disease?

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. It develops over many years so you may not have symptoms until there is a significant blockage. That’s why it’s important to see a primary care physician regularly and to be honest with them about your lifestyle choices so they can see a complete picture of your health. It is crucial to know your risk and manage your controllable risk factors.

To help evaluate and manage your risk, HCA Midwest Health offers:

Do I have coronary artery disease?

If a primary care physician or cardiologist suspects heart disease, the diagnosis can be confirmed and the extent and severity can be evaluated with the following tests:

  • Stress test
  • Cardiac imaging
  • Coronary angiogram (diagnostic cardiac catheterization)

Treatment options

If you or a loved one are having life-style limiting symptoms despite being on medication, or are unable to tolerate medication, you may be a candidate for coronary revascularization.

At the HCA Midwest Health Heart and Vascular Institute we offer the latest technology and treatments to deliver the most modern care with the best possible results. Our interventional cardiologist and cardiac surgeons work together to determine the best treatment approach, whether surgical or non-surgical.

Minimally-invasive coronary heart procedures

Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) are minimally-invasive, catheter-based heart procedures that are used to open clogged arteries and restore blood flow to the heart.

At the HCA Midwest Health Heart and Vascular Institute we offer the latest PCI therapies and technology to treat even the most complex coronary artery disease.

We offer the following PCIs:

Coronary balloon angioplasty (coronary revascularization by PCI) – A coronary angioplasty is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure used to open narrowed or blocked arteries. Once the catheter reaches the blockage, a tiny balloon is inflated to open the artery. The balloon is then deflated and removed.

Angioplasty with cardiac stent – An angioplasty with a stent is a balloon angioplasty with the addition of an expandable tube, usually made of a metal mesh wire, which is used to hold the artery open.

Robotic-assisted coronary angioplasty – This is a coronary angioplasty with a stent performed using robotic technology. It allows your interventional cardiologist to have better visualization and precise control over angioplasty tools.

Chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention (CTO PCI) – This is a new minimally invasive procedure, catheter-based that uses advanced tools and techniques to clear completely blocked arteries.

Protected percutaneous coronary intervention (protected PCI) – A protected PCI is a percutaneous coronary intervention procedure with the support of a heart pump for people who are high risk.

Coronary bypass heart surgery

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)

Coronary artery bypass grafting is an open-heart surgery that is used to restore blood flow to the heart. During the surgery an artery or vein from another part of your body is used to make a new path for blood to flow around the blockage.

During traditional CABG, the breastbone is cut and a heart-lung machine is used so that blood and oxygen can continue to flow through the body while the heart is repaired.

Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting

During minimally invasive coronary artery surgery, a small incision is made in the chest to perform the bypass. During this surgery, the heart is still beating and the heart-lung machine is not needed.
