Midwest Physicians, part of HCA Midwest Health System, today announced that 38 physicians from its practices were selected by colleagues for inclusion in KC Magazine’s 2011 Super Doctor® list.

Super Doctors honorees are selected through a thorough evaluation process, which incorporates peer recognition and professional achievements. As part of the process, area physicians were polled as to whom they would select if they needed medical care. Honorees were selected from multiple primary and specialty care fields. The 38 physicians from Midwest Physicians represent a range of specialties.

The physicians representing Midwest Physicians:

Carl David Akin, MD, FACC – Cardiology Associates Medical Group, Independence, Mo.
Dr. Akin is a board-certified interventional cardiologist with more than 30 years of experience. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the Metropolitan Medical Society of Kansas City, the American Medical Association and the Missouri State Medical Association. Dr. Akin is on staff at Centerpoint Medical Center.

Kathleen A. Alm, MD* – Jackson County Medical Group, Independence, Mo.
Dr. Alm is board certified and specializes in endocrinology and metabolism. She has practiced for more than 20 years and is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. Dr. Alm is on staff at Centerpoint Medical Center.

Elizabeth A. Andes, MD* – Jackson County Medical Group, Independence, Mo.
Dr. Andes is board certified in internal medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. She helped create the palliative care team at Centerpoint Hospital and her clinical interests lie in proactive care. Dr. Andes is on staff at Centerpoint Medical Center.

Stephen A. Bloom, MD, FSCCT, FACP, FAHA, FASNC, FACC – Midwest Cardiology Associates, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Bloom, board certified in internal medicine, has subspecialties in cardiovascular diseases, nuclear cardiology, and cardiovascular computed tomography. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography and American College of Physicians. Dr. Bloom is on staff at Centerpoint Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Douglas L. Bradley, MD* – Belton Family Practice, Belton, Mo.
Dr. Bradley is a board-certified family medicine physician with nearly 30 years of experience. He is an active participant in community service, contributing through activities such as providing sports physicals for the local school districts and for Special Olympians in the Belton School District. One of the founding physicians of Belton Family Practice where he continues to practice, Dr. Bradley is also chief medical officer at Research Belton Hospital.

Martin S. Buckman, MD* – Quivira Internal Medicine, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Buckman is a board-certified internal medicine physician with a specific focus on preventative medicine. He has been in practice for more than 30 years and is a member of the Kansas Medical Society and the Johnson County Medical Society. Dr. Buckman is on staff at Overland Park Medical Center.

Joe A. Cates. MD – Kansas City Vascular and General Surgery, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Cates is board certified in both general and vascular surgery and has been honored with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Award for Surgical Excellence, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Golden Heart Award and Golden Scalpel Award. Paul R. Chu, MD, FACC – Cardiology Associates Medical Group, Independence, Mo.
Dr. Chu is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a diplomate of the Board of Nuclear Cardiology. James R. Eynon, MD – Midwest Heart Associates, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Eynon, with more than 30 years of experience, is a board-certified cardiologist and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Eynon has a strong academic background in addition to his patient care expertise and has served as an instructor and assistant professor of medicine. Dr. Eynon is on staff at Cass Regional Medical Center, Lee’s Summit Medical Center, Research Belton Hospital and Research Medical Center.

Laurie D. Fisher, MD* – Town Plaza Family Practice, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Fisher is a board-certified family medicine physician and specializes in obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and general medicine, with a particular emphasis on women’s healthcare management. Dr. Fisher has been in practice for more than 14 years and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. John M. Forman, MD* – Midwest Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons-Mo., Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Forman is a board-certified thoracic surgeon and has been in practice for more than 20 years. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a diplomat of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Forman is on staff at Overland Park Medical Center and Research Medical Center.

Todd E. Fristo, MD* – Family Health Specialists of Lee's Summit, Lee’s Summit, MO.
Dr. Fristo is a board-certified family medicine physician, with more than 15 years in practice and has served as the director of palliative care for Lee’s Summit Medical Center since 2008. He is extremely active in the community, volunteering his time at the Kansas City Free Clinic and providing guidance to medical and nurse practitioner students. John M. Goldberg, MD* – Statland Medical Group, Overland Park, Kan.

Dr. Hannah is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has served as chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Kansas Hospital, and medical staff president, surgery department chairman and head of cardiothoracic surgery at Menorah Medical Center. J. Woody Harlan, MD* – Kansas City Neurology Associates, Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Dr. Harlan is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has more than 20 years in practice. Dr. Harlan is affiliated with the American Association for the Study of Headache and the Missouri State Neurological Association and a former chair for the department of Neurology and Psychiatry at Research Medical Center. Dr. Harlan is on staff at Lee’s Summit Medical Center.

Kathryn A. Hedges, MD* – Kansas City Neurology Associates, Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Dr. Hedges, a board-certified neurologist, has a special focus on the neurological needs of older adults. Her specific practice interest is in treatment for strokes and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Hedges is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and is a past president of the Kansas City Neurology/Neurosurgery Society. She is on staff at Lee’s Summit Medical Center.

Edward F. Higgins, Jr, MD* – Kansas City Vascular and General Surgery, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Higgins, board certified in surgery, has been honored by numerous Kansas City area publications and named as a Doctor of the Year. He was also honored as a Doctor of Distinction by the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Medical Society and as a Distinguished Alumnus for St. Lawrence University. Dr. Higgins is on staff at Menorah Medical Center and Research Medical Center.

Willie E. Lawrence, Jr., MD – Midwest Heart Associates, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Lawrence is a board-certified cardiologist and serves as chief of the Division of Cardiology at Research Medical Center and the director for Midwest Heart Associates. Dr. Lawrence is the founder and director of Research Medical Center’s Congestive Heart Failure program and the director of the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation program. Dr. Lawrence is on staff at Cass Regional Medical Center, Lee’s Summit Medical Center, Research Belton Hospital and Research Medical Center.

Carol B. Lindsley, MD* – Pediatric Specialty Clinic, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Lindsley is board certified in pediatrics with a subspecialty in pediatric rheumatology. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including The American College of Rheumatology Master Award, and was named among the 2005 and 2007 listings of “America’s Top Pediatricians” by the Consumer Research Council of America. Dr. Lindsley currently serves as the Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology at the University of Kansas Medical Center and is on staff at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Susan M. Mou, MD* – Town Plaza Family Practice, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Mou is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She specializes in general obstetrics and gynecology with special interest in adolescent medicine and Ob/GYN infectious diseases. She has served at academic institutions such as the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester New York and the University of Missouri- Kansas City. Dr. Mou is on staff at Menorah Medical Center.

Daniel Murillo, MD – Research Medical Center Transplant Physicians, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Murillo, board-certified surgeon, has served as medical director of the kidney and pancreas transplant program at Research Medical Center since 2003. He also serves as assistant clinical professor in the surgery department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Darryl K. Nelson, MD* – Family Health Specialists of Lee's Summit, Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Dr. Nelson is a board-certified family medicine physician and serves as chief medical officer for HCA Midwest Health System and Midwest Physicians. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians and the Kansas City Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Nelson has been in practice for 20 years. John B. Nelson, MD – Kansas Pulmonary & Sleep Physicians, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Nelson, board certified in pulmonology, has more than 25 years of experience. He currently serves as medical director of ICU/CCU, Sleep Disorders Center and Pulmonary Rehabilitation of Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Martin P. O'Laughlin, MD* – Pediatric Specialty Clinic, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. O'Laughlin is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and board certified in pediatric cardiology. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Cardiology and Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. He has been named among “America’s Top Pediatricians” by the Consumer Research Council of America. Shari L. Ommen, MD* – Goppert-Trinity Family Care Center, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Ommen is board certified in family medicine and a member of the American Academy of Family Practice. In addition to treating patients, she has served as a faculty physician, teaching residents for 10 years. Dr. Ommen has generously donated her time and talents, first as a medical missionary and more recently as a member of the Atonement Lutheran Church Foundation Board. Sarat C. Pachalla, MD, FACC – Cardiology Associates Medical Group, Independence, Mo.
Dr. Pachalla is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Ujjaval M. Patel, MD, FACC – Midwest Cardiology Associates, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Patel is a board-certified cardiologist with expertise in general and interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular disease. He performs intravascular ultrasound, intracardiac ultrasound and percuteneous closure of the patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defects. Frederic L. Seligson, MD* – Midwest Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons-Mo., Kansas City, Mo.

Bruce H. Short, MD* – Quivira Internal Medicine, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Short, board certified in internal medicine, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has been recognized for writing a protocol based on being proactive in decreasing hospital-acquired infections. This protocol was used at Overland Park Regional Hospital and hospital-acquired infections were significantly reduced. The protocol was used as a model for developing infection prevention protocols for all of HCA's hospitals. Dr. Short is on staff at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Anne K. Sly, MD – Goppert-Trinity Family Care Center, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Sly is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Internal Medicine (with a CAQ in Geriatrics). Her clinical interests include hospitalist care, geriatrics and diabetes care. She has been in family residency teaching for more than fifteen years and currently serves as an associate director for the Research Family Medicine Residency Program. Michael S. Sokol, MD* – Statland Medical Group, Overland Park, Kan.
Dr. Sokol is board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology and psychology, and practices all three disciplines. Dr. Sokol also has added board certifications in diabetes education and bone densitometry. Lloyd D. Stahl, MD – Midwest Cardiology Associates, Overland Park, Kan.

Mark R. Suenram, MD – Goppert-Trinity Family Care Center, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Suenram, a board-certified family physician, has been honored by the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Mead Johnson Award for Graduate Education in Family Medicine. He practiced family medicine for 11 years in Lee’s Summit, before becoming associate director at Research Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program. Michael J. Waxman, MD* – Kansas City Pulmonology Practice, Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Waxman is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. He is medical director of Research Medical Center’s Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Waxman also specializes in bronchoscopic interventional therapy and is affiliated with the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.
