Dennis Marquardt’s wife, Peri, called 9-1-1 at 2:30 a.m. in June 2013 when she couldn’t wake him. “He was making strange noises, and when I turned on the light, he was gray,” says Peri, an Overland Park resident. The dispatcher on the other end of the phone coached her through live-saving CPR until the ambulance arrived within minutes. EMS first responders administered CPR again, and shocked Dennis’s heart four times before transporting him to Overland Park Regional Medical Center (OPRMC), a Level II Regional Trauma Center and Accredited Chest Pain Center, where Aaron Doonan, MD, Cardiologist, performed six bypasses. Wednesday’s Great Save event at OPRMC will be the first time Dennis will meet the EMS first responders and the hospital staff who helped save his life. “I owe them a debt of gratitude,” says Dennis, the heart attack survivor.

Pamela and Carl Bryant’s lives were forever changed on Jan. 21, 2014 when a neighbor approached their Independence home and shot both of them at close range. The husband and wife arrived by ambulance at Centerpoint Medical Center, eastern Jackson County’s only Level II Trauma Center, where they underwent surgery for multiple injuries. Following lengthy hospital stays, the couple transferred to a rehabilitation facility where they continue to participate in physical, occupational, and speech therapy together. The Bryant’s are anxious to meet the first responders who came to their home in January and stabilized them prior to transporting them to Centerpoint Medical Center.

Monique Hardy of Independence was involved in a high-speed car accident in Warrensburg on Nov. 11, 2013. The car struck a tree and pinned Hardy in the vehicle at her waist. EMS responders contacted Life Flight Eagle (LFE) and worked for two hours to extricate Hardy from the wreckage. She was transferred to the care of LFE and transported to Research Medical Center (RMC), a Level 1 Trauma Facility, where Heather Klepacz, MD and the trauma team cared for the trauma patient. Hardy is excited to meet the first responders and RMC staff who stabilized her immediately following the accident that took the lives of two companions.
