HCA Midwest Health — Kansas City’s largest healthcare provider with seven hospitals and dozens of outpatient centers, clinics, physician practices, surgery centers and an array of other facilities and services to meet residents’ healthcare needs across the region — announced that Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Menorah Medical Center have earned the prestigious “Straight A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, marking the seventh consecutive time the hospitals have been awarded “A” grades. Centerpoint Medical Center and Lee’s Summit Medical Center earned an “A” grade, which collectively ranks HCA Midwest Health as the region’s leader for hospital patient safety.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. The national “Straight A” and “A” distinctions celebrate the achievements of Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center, Centerpoint Medical Center and Lee’s Summit Medical Center in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. The new grades reflect performance primarily during the height of the pandemic.

“We pride ourselves on our clinical outcomes, patient experience and patient safety – which is unsurpassed in the region,” said HCA Midwest Health President Keith Zimmerman. “On behalf of the patients and families we serve, I thank our nurses, physicians and support teams for their commitment to and passion for patient safety.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But these hospitals received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.”

Research Medical Center and Belton Regional Medical Center earned Spring 2023 “B” grades from the Leapfrog Group, meaning all eligible HCA Midwest Health facilities earned “As” or “Bs.”

In addition to earning these accolades, Centerpoint Medical Center and Menorah Medical Center were each recently recognized as a “Top 50 Best Hospital in the Country for Surgical Care” with a 2023 Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Award™ out of 4,500 hospitals across the country. Additionally, Research Medical Center, Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Centerpoint Medical Center and Menorah Medical Center were named among America’s 250 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
