Kansas City, Mo. — Research Medical Center — part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s largest healthcare provider –— hosted a historical $35MM groundbreaking of Brookside ER, an emergency care hospital, to replace the current facility, providing residents of Jackson County with state-of-the-art and expanded access to 24/7 emergency care. The current Brookside ER facility will remain open until the new emergency care hospital opens in late 2026.

State-of-the-art emergency services

More than a year in the making, the 20,000-square-foot Brookside ER will be staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians and experienced nurses, available around the clock to care for adults and children. The facility — to be located at 6675 Holmes Road, on the same campus as the current facility — will feature 22 private emergency care rooms and advanced diagnostic capabilities.

Services will include: ultrasound, mammogram, X-ray, CT scan, bone density and laboratory services. Patients will receive the same high-quality, compassionate care they have come to know at Brookside ER, and other hospital-based emergency departments across HCA Midwest Health. Brookside ER has some of the highest patient satisfaction scores within HCA Midwest Health and is one of the busiest free-standing emergency rooms within HCA Healthcare — the largest provider of emergency services in the county.

“This newly designed, larger facility will strengthen our ability to better serve Jackson County, meeting the growing needs of our community with experienced physicians, state-of-the-art technology and capabilities,” said Research Medical CEO Kirk McCarty. “It means faster access to critical care, an optimal experience for patients, and the reassurance that advanced emergency medicine is available right here in our community.”

Research Medical Center is home to one of the area’s busiest emergency departments and a Level I Trauma Center. The replacement ER facility will help reduce wait times and enhance the patient experience across both locations.
