Cardiology

Cardiology is the medical treatment of diseases of the heart and parts of the circulatory system. Cardiologists are the doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating these conditions.

Advanced heart care in a community hospital

At OPRMC, we excel in treating cardiovascular disease. Our cardiologists and cardiac surgeons participate in research to discover new techniques to reverse blocked heart arteries, prevent cerebrovascular accidents (strokes) and strengthen weakened hearts.

The HCA Midwest Health clinical research program offers another therapeutic option for patients through clinical trials.

Want to know if you or a loved one is at risk for heart disease? We can help you learn more about the chances of developing it.

Our heart care services

We offer a wide range of cardiac care, including medical management, cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehabilitation and open-heart surgery. Some procedures we perform at Overland Park include the following:

Fenestrated graft for difficult abdominal aortic aneurysm

In an endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, the surgeon places a stent below the kidney arteries. For the graft to seal, there needs to be about one centimeter of the normal aorta. However, about one out of every 10 aneurysms is too close to the kidney arteries to use this approach. Until recently, open surgery or no surgery was the only option for these patients.

At OPRMC, we customize a graft based on your anatomy. This custom graft has holes that line up with the renal arteries that allow the graft to seal without shutting off blood supply to the kidneys. Using this approach, we can treat difficult aortic aneurysms minimally invasively, resulting in a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery.

OPRMC also operates the most extensive abdominal aortic aneurysm stent graft program in the region.

Robotic-assisted angioplasty

We offer robotic-assisted angioplasty, which allows your interventional cardiologist to control the angioplasty tools with increased precision. Your doctor can measure your anatomy to help choose the best stent for you and move the stent a millimeter at a time to position it exactly where it needs to be.

The robotic system also allows for better visualization during the procedure. These benefits may lead to a shorter procedure and less radiation exposure.

Syncope

Syncope is a sudden, short-term loss of consciousness. Syncope is usually the result of a drop in blood pressure. Blood pressure is controlled by an automatic, involuntary function of the heart or autonomic nervous system. Although syncope is a common problem, it is tough to identify and treat. Overland Park Regional Medical Center offers a syncope clinic that provides a comprehensive approach and special testing of the autonomic nervous system to identify the root cause of syncope.

Our cardiac electrophysiologists continuously seek the latest clinical advancements for accurately identifying the cause of and treatments for syncope. One method used is autonomic reflex testing, where we assess autonomic nervous system testing via a series of stimuli to monitor blood pressure, blood flow, heart rate, skin temperature and sweating to determine the cause of syncope. Additional testing may include electrophysiology studies, neurological evaluation, a computed tomography (CT) scan and vestibular function testing.

Care Connect

We're continually looking for ways to improve healthcare. That's why we created Care Connect, which makes healthcare easier to navigate. Care Connect helps you find the right care at the right time and keeps you and your loved ones healthy.

Care Assure, one of Care Connect's programs, helps us screen the results of tests performed during an emergency or doctor's visit to identify warning signs and prevent emergencies such as a heart attack or a stroke. If the screens show that you're at risk for a potential emergency, a specially trained nurse will call you to help connect you to the follow-up care you need to help prevent a future emergency.

The symptoms of high blood pressure you shouldn't ignore

High blood pressure is common but should not be taken lightly. Dr. Marco Mazzella from Lee's Summit Medical Center explains why and what to look out for.
