Breast cancer detection and care
Our women's health program features traditional mammography and advanced breast imaging procedures, so women in our community have access to comprehensive screenings. In an effort to provide care for woman with all types of breast conditions, we perform breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and breast ultrasounds in addition to mammography. If any abnormalities are detected, we can perform biopsies to identify if breast cancer is present.
When treatment is needed, our breast surgeons use the latest techniques, including robotic surgery, to perform a range of specialized breast surgeries, including:
- Hidden scar breast surgery
- Plastic and reconstructive surgery
- Stereotactic radiosurgery
Colorectal cancer detection and care
We offer screenings and treatment for cancers of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Cancerous tumors in this region usually start as small polyps. One of the best ways to detect these polyps is with a colonoscopy.
Our colorectal specialists perform colonoscopies to identify any polyps or suspicious tissue. If abnormalities are found, we will collect a sample of the suspicious tissue and send it to our laboratory to determine if it is cancerous or benign.
If cancer is detected, our colorectal surgeons use robotic surgery to remove cancerous tissue. Robotic surgery allows our surgeons to operate in hard-to-reach places with extreme precision using only a few small incisions.
Lung cancer detection
We are committed to bringing screening awareness and accessibility to people at a high risk of developing lung cancer. That's why we offer low-dose computerized tomography (CT) lung screenings, which help physicians detect suspicious nodules that are not visible in X-rays.
Current and former smokers who have no symptoms of lung cancer and have smoked the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes per day for 30 years may qualify for low-dose CT screening.
Our cancer treatments
Our physicians use specialized screenings, laboratory services and imaging exams to detect cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages. When cancer is detected our team is ready to develop a plan of care and begin treatment, which may include:
Chemotherapy is a commonly used treatment for many types of cancer. It uses drugs that interfere with the a cancer's ability to reproduce and grow. One of the most common side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss. However, we offer scalp cooling technology that stops hair from falling out while under undergoing treatment.
We are committed to supporting our patients throughout cancer treatment and minimizing side effects, when possible.
Lymphedema is swelling that occurs in one or more of a patients' arms or legs. It is commonly caused by the removal or damage to the lymph nodes, which may occur due to cancer treatment. We provide lymphedema therapy, which is the process of removing excess fluid that causes swelling through exercise, compression and/or manual drainage.
Radiation therapy, also called radiation oncology, involves killing cancer cells with beams of high-energy radiation. This cancer treatment can precisely target and treat malignant tumors. Our radiation therapists use different types of radiation therapy, including high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, image-guided radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.
We offer surgeries for certain types of cancer, such as breast and colorectal cancers. We use minimally invasive robotic surgery for many procedures, which offers many benefits compared to traditional surgery, including minimal scarring and faster recovery times.
As part of HCA Midwest Health, we are associated with a family of hospitals in the Kansas City region. We can seamlessly coordinate care for procedures offered at one of our sister facilities, when needed.
Our dedicated patient navigators are oncology-trained nurses who serve as points of contact for patients throughout their cancer journey. Patient navigators offer educational resources, explain diagnoses and treatments and inform patients about national clinical trials.
Some types of cancer are hereditary. That's why we offer genetic testing and counseling to patients who are concerned about their family's history of cancer. Our board-certified genetic counselors provide on-site cancer risk assessments and offer personalized information regarding genetic influences, specific cancer risks and targeted screening and prevention options.
