Expert and compassionate rehab care

At HCA Midwest Health, our hospital-based programs offer comprehensive rehab services, from 24-hour inpatient care to outpatient physical therapy. Our mission is to help patients regain functionality and get back to the activities they enjoy.

Our rehab team consists of physicians, therapists, nurses and specialists who work together to help patients reach their goals. Because all of our rehab programs are located within major medical centers, patients have access to other medical specialists, advanced diagnostics, treatment technologies and all the resources of HCA Midwest Health.

Acute therapy

All of our hospitals offer acute therapy to help patients regain strength and mobility after being admitted to the hospital and before returning home. If more extensive therapy is required, a patient may be referred to an inpatient or outpatient rehab program.

Inpatient physical rehab

Several of our hospitals offer inpatient rehab to patients who require 24-hour care and intensive daily rehab therapy. In inpatient rehab, patients participate in a combination of therapies, which can include physical, occupational and speech therapies. Most patients spend 3 hours per day, 5 days per week working with skilled rehab specialists.

For over 20 years, patients have chosen HCA Midwest Health hospitals because our inpatient rehab program helps patients:

  • Reach new heights and develop new skills
  • Retrain the nerves, muscles and joints so they "talk to each other" again or in new ways
  • Encourage the body to master small tasks critical to everyday independence, such as getting out of bed, grasping a fork and knife and driving a car

Outpatient rehab

Our outpatient rehabilitation programs have helped thousands of patients gain, improve and preserve strength and skills to help them live fuller, more independent and more productive lives.

All of our hospitals offer outpatient rehabilitation, including physical, occupational and speech therapy. Our outpatient programs have specialized services for custom treatment plans, providing the individualized care needed to get patients back to living their lives quickly and wholly.

Comprehensive rehab therapy programs

Our highly trained physical therapists and specialists provide a range of rehab therapies to promote recovery and build strength and skills.

Physical therapy

All of our hospitals offer physical therapy to help patients correct and prevent short- or long-term movement problems that affect the ability to function in everyday activities. Our physical therapists may use a combination of techniques to promote optimum health and functionality, including:

  • Balance and endurance training
  • Education to help maintain and build on progress
  • Exercise and strength training
  • Gait training to learn how to walk without further injury
  • Joint mobilization
  • Manual therapy, such as massage or the manipulation of muscles by a therapist
  • Training to use a prosthetic device, walker, crutches or wheelchair

Occupational therapy

Our hospitals offer occupational therapy programs where patients can grow and recover in safe and caring environments. Occupational therapy helps increase independence by restoring the skills needed for daily activities and self-care.

To help our patients improve in areas such as eating, dressing, bathing, working and cooking, our occupational therapists may include the following techniques in their treatments:

Speech and swallowing therapies

Our hospitals offer speech and swallowing therapies to help patients with conditions that have impaired their ability to speak, swallow or reason. Our speech-language pathologists use advanced, specialized equipment and work with ear, nose and throat physicians (otolaryngologists) to analyze patients.

Aquatic therapy

Several of our hospitals offer aquatic therapy to help patients with their movement, gait and functionality. We use individual and group aquatic therapy programs to aid patients in their recovery from muscle, bone and neurological conditions and injuries.

Vestibular rehabilitation

Many of our hospitals offer vestibular rehabilitation, which uses specialized exercises and therapies to help patients with balance issues and dizziness. Our rehab specialists use specific exercises and therapies to help the brain adapt to new ways of creating balance in posture, movement, coordination and sight.

Specialized rehab treatments and programs

Many of our hospitals offer specialized rehab programs for patients with certain medical disorders or who have experienced a stroke or heart attack. To help patients regain functionality and get back to the activities they enjoy, our specialized rehab programs use a combination of therapies, such as:

Pediatric physical therapy and rehab

We provide specialized pediatric physical therapy and rehab services to children with medical conditions and developmental delays as well as patients recovering from surgery. Our pediatric physical therapists are specially trained and work with a child’s primary care physician to provide rehabilitative services designed to restore mobility and decrease pain.

Our pediatric occupational therapists provide interventions to children who have or are at risk of having developmental delays and are experiencing difficulties functioning in one or more areas of their lives.
