HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network, has appointed Jackie DeSouza as chief executive officer of Lee’s Summit Medical Center. DeSouza will assume responsibility of this acute-care hospital with nearly 300 physicians and 500 employees on Nov. 28, 2011. Lee’s Summit Medical Center was recently named one of the nation's top performing hospitals on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the nation's leading accreditor of health care organizations.
Since January 2006, DeSouza has served as chief operating officer of Research Medical Center. During DeSouza’s tenure as COO with responsibility for hospital daily operations, Research Medical Center received numerous awards and accreditations including the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus awards for heart failure and stroke and Gold for Heart Care; certification from The Joint Commission as both a Primary Stroke Center and an Advanced Heart Failure Center; certification as a Level I Trauma Center; three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons; and accreditation as an American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program.
DeSouza is also heavily involved in several community organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Free Health Clinic and as one of the top five fund-raisers for the American Heart Association's Kansas City Heart Walk.
“Jackie has a strong knowledge of hospital operations and the impressive ability to build and lead effective and dedicated teams of employees and physicians,” says Mel Lagarde, president of HCA Midwest Health System. “She has deep roots in the community and is the perfect fit to build on the foundation of Lee’s Summit Medical Center’s accomplishments.”
Lee’s Summit Medical Center board chair Syrtiller Kabat, PhD, says DeSouza’s appointment reflects HCA Midwest Health System’s commitment to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. "Jackie is articulate, enthusiastic and committed to Lee's Summit Medical Center's strong path forward,” says Kabat. “She has been successful at building and expanding healthcare programs in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area and is committed to do so here as well."
DeSouza says the cohesive team at Lee’s Summit Medical Center collaborates to deliver not only excellent and compassionate patient care, but also the best possible outcomes and support for patients during their treatment. “People living in the area have progressive and innovative programs for their health needs in their neighborhood,” says DeSouza. “Lee’s Summit Medical Center is an exemplary hospital, and I’m excited to help continue the many strengths of the hospital’s unique patient-centered approach.”
Lagarde says DeSouza’s leadership skills and experience will be a great asset to the hospital as she leads the management team and continues to build upon its achievements in service and clinical excellence and employee engagement. “Jackie's excellent performance at Research Medical Center will be a tremendous benefit for Lee's Summit Medical Center and will help advance HCA Midwest Health System’s philosophy and mission of top-notch patient care,” says Lagarde.
