WHY: Generous donations of breast cancer patients and families and Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Overland Park Medical Center staff have made possible the purchase of a Healing Chair—a specially designed reclining lift chair to aide patients at home as they recover from mastectomy surgery.
The Healing Chair Organization is a Missouri-based nonprofit launched in St. Louis in 2013 and in Kansas City three years later. Today the Kansas City chapter has more than 35 chairs in rotation to assist patients who, after mastectomy surgery, are unable to lie flat, easily lift their arms or stand on their own.
“This is a remarkable organization whose mission is to provide much more than just a chair for breast cancer patients who have had undergone mastectomies,” says Anne Kobbermann, M.D. board-certified and fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist at Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. “Typically, during the recovery period—which can be anywhere from two weeks to a month—a woman’s mobility and independence are curtailed. A Healing Chair enables a woman to experience a high quality of life during that time. Once a woman has recovered, the chair is delivered to another patient. It becomes a community of women supporting one another physically and emotionally, ensuring they know they’re not alone on the breast cancer journey.”
“We are grateful to have so many compassionate patients, families and staff who care about helping other patients on a personal level,” says Overland Park Regional Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Matt Sogard, FACHE. “The Healing Chair represents a unique way to make a positive impact on our patients, their recovery and well-being.”
The money for the Healing Chair was donated in part from Cora, a nine-year-old young girl who had researched and read about the cancer services and support it provides to patients and their families in the area. Last year, she decided to forgo birthday gifts in lieu of money to donate to Sarah Cannon and passed around an envelope at her family birthday party in December, sharing facts about Sarah Cannon, who it was named for and what type of treatments it offers cancer patients. Cora and her mom, Christy, drive past Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Overland Park Regional Medical Center every day. Cora and Christy will be onsite during the event to be able to witness how Cora’s big heart and passion are making a difference to cancer patients.
