Research Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network—is once again preparing to host more than 1,500 of its neighbors during the hospital’s annual Community Block Party and Health Fair. As part its commitment to healthy living, The Research Foundation, along with Research Medical Center, puts out the welcome mat from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 2316 E. Meyer Blvd.
The fifth annual Community Block Party and Health Fair will feature free activities and health screenings to encourage healthy lifestyles and 90 booths will offer area residents health information that can be beneficial for everyone in their family. Prizes, kids’ activities and entertainment will run throughout the day. In addition, local celebrity Chef Jasper Mirabile, Jr. will do live cooking demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Attendees will have access to free health screenings including blood pressure, blood glucose, Body Mass Index (BMI), bone density, take-home colorectal cancer kits, dental, glaucoma, hepatitis and prostate (PSA) screenings.
Kid-oriented activities during the four-hour Community Block Party and Health Fair include free books from the Kansas City Public Library, carnival games and face painting. The first 250 children will be fitted with free bicycle safety helmets from the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City. A KCMO Fire Department fire engine will be on hand, along with the Bearcat Tactical Unit from the KCMO Police Department. The popular Teddy Bear Clinic will provide free “official check-ups” to dolls and teddy bears.
An exciting new feature this year to the Community Block Party and Health Fair is a free soccer clinic at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, plus free t-shirts and soccer balls for the first 200 kids.
Celebrating its 125th anniversary, Research Medical Center is a leader in sponsoring community-related events that offer relevant health information for the modern family and their challenges. “This annual Community Block Party and Health Fair is an opportunity to gather our friends and neighbors for a fun day, while providing useful information to help achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” says Kevin J. Hicks, chief executive officer of Research Medical Center. “This event is an integral part of our commitment to provide an exceptional level of care to our community.”
Local community entertainment will perform every half hour and there will be organized half- and one-mile walks beginning at 11 a.m. Additional sponsors of the Community Block Party and Health Fair include the Harmon Diabetes Center, The Research Foundation and the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund.
