Centerpoint Medical Center Announces Record Year of Life-Saving Organ Transplants

Centerpoint Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s leading healthcare provider—announced today that 2016 was a record year for potential and eligible organ donors. According to the Midwest Transplant Network, 100 percent of all potential and eligible Centerpoint Medical Center donors donated, allowing 40 people to receive a new lease on life due to an organ transplant. In addition, 3,600 individuals benefitted from tissue donation and 54 people were gifted with sight due to cornea donation. It is the first time a hospital has achieved this conversion rate since 2012.

“We are truly blessed to assist patients and their families create a small positive from their tragic losses,” says David Williams, Centerpoint Medical Center Chief Executive Officer. “We are also very honored to facilitate that gift of life to others who wait. Organ and tissue donations save and heal many lives each year and Centerpoint Medical Center is honored to recognize the tremendous gift given by members of our community. It personifies our commitment to the care and improvement of human life.”

“We are thankful for those who have chosen to give the gift of life,” says Midwest Transplant Network Chief Executive Officer Rob Linderer. “Because of those donors, as well as our hospital and professional partners like Centerpoint Medical Center, we are able to fulfill our mission of saving lives through organ and tissue donation.”

Each year, due to the generosity of the Centerpoint Medical Center staff, a rose for each donor is placed on the Donate Life Rose Parade float in Pasadena, Calif.  The hospital will host a recognition ceremony in April where each donor family will receive a replica vial and rose identical to the one that adorned the float on January 2, 2017.

According to the Midwest Transplant Network, there are 119,000 men, women and children on the national transplant waiting list.  Every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list and 22 people die each day waiting for a transplant.  Midwest Transplant Network’s service area includes the state of Kansas and the western two-thirds of Missouri.  In the U.S. in 2016, organ transplants performed reached a new record high for the fourth consecutive year, according to data from United Network for Organ Sharing. For the year, 33,606 transplants were reported, representing an 8.5 percent increase over the 2015 total and increase of 19.8 percent since 2012.
