Lee’s Summit Medical Center announced today that it was again honored with an “A” on the latest Hospital Safety Score released by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. This represents the third consecutive “A” grade for Lee’s Summit Medical Center since The Leapfrog Group began publicly releasing hospital scores a year ago. Lee’s Summit Medical Center was the only Kansas City-area hospital to earn an “A” in the previous two releases.
The Hospital Safety Score assigns A, B, C, D or F scores to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of patient safety experts and is designed to give the public information they can use when selecting a hospital for emergency services or other health care.
Lee’s Summit Medical Center, part of HCA Midwest Health System—Kansas City’s largest healthcare network and private sector employer—is one of only two hospitals in the Kansas City metropolitan area to receive the highest patient safety rating in the latest data released May 8 by The Leapfrog Group. The other hospital earning an “A” is University of Kansas Hospital.
“This ‘A’ makes us proud because it means patients continue to receive great care at Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Patients choose us because our nurses and doctors are at the top of their professions,” says Jackie DeSouza, president and chief executive officer, Lee’s Summit Medical Center.
"The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score is a valuable measure of performance and is one tool patients can use when choosing emergency services or a hospital. I’ll humbly say that to earn the highest quality grades among all hospitals is truly an honor.”
“Hospitals like this that earn an ‘A’ have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community,” says Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer of The Leapfrog Group. “I again congratulate Lee’s Summit Medical Center for its safety excellence. They are a leading hospital for quality care.”

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score.
The Leapfrog safety rating is the latest national recognition of excellence for Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Recently, Lee’s Summit Medical Center also earned the highest score among all Kansas City-area hospitals in the Consumer Reports national hospital rating. Last fall, Lee’s Summit Medical Center was also named as one of the nation’s top performing hospitals on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accreditor of healthcare organizations.
