Research Medical Center November 04, 2016

Research Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s leading healthcare provider—today announced that it has achieved 5-stars for its performance in  spinal fusion, stroke care, treatment of pneumonia, peripheral vascular bypass, and treatment of sepsis and respiratory failure from Healthgrades. These achievements are part of new findings and data released by Healthgrades and are featured in the Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*

Research Medical Center is a Five-Star Recipient in these five areas: Orthopedics, spinal fusion; Neurosciences, treatment of stroke; Pulmonary, treatment of pneumonia for three consecutive years; Vascular, peripheral vascular bypass for two consecutive years; and Critical Care, treatment of sepsis and treatment of respiratory failure. The hospital also received the Healthgrades 2017 Stroke Care Excellence Award and was named among the top 10 percent in the nation for treatment of stroke.

The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2013-2015, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 223,412 lives could potentially have been saved and 162,215 complications could potentially have been avoided. ** A 5-star rating indicates Research Medical Center’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

"It is an absolute honor to receive these accolades from Healthgrades and to be recognized as one of the top hospitals in the nation for orthopedics, neurosciences, pulmonary, vascular and critical care."
Jackie DeSouza-Van Blaricum, CEO

“It is an absolute honor to receive these accolades from Healthgrades and to be recognized as one of the top hospitals in the nation for orthopedics, neurosciences, pulmonary, vascular and critical care,” says Research Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jackie DeSouza-Van Blaricum. “We continually strive to provide best-in-class quality and clinical excellence for our patients. I am extremely proud of our outstanding team of clinicians and staff deeply committed to delivering high-quality care to residents in the community, day in and day out. It is a privilege for us to serve patients and their families during their greatest time of need.”

“Hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades 5-stars in spinal fusion, stroke care, treatment of pneumonia, peripheral vascular bypass, and treatment of sepsis and respiratory failure have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care for their patients,” says Healthgrades Chief Strategy Officer Evan Marks. “In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving a superior degree of quality for their patients is more important than ever.”

*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures, as well as an evaluation of comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 18 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
