Ticks Pose a Serious Summertime Danger

Each year, about 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported to the CDC. Dr. Erik Petersen, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Centerpoint Medical Center, says the disease, which is actually a bacterial infection you get from the bite of an infected tick, is prevalent in our area and includes symptoms such as a rash, fever, muscle aches and fatigue. Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent tick bites or to safely remove those that do become attached. Here’s what you need to know about Lyme disease and other common summertime illnesses including e-coli, which can problematic when swimming in lake, ponds, and untreated or overcrowded pools.
