WHY: Thanks to regular year-round farmer’s markets in cities large and small, American’s have a heightened awareness of the importance that healthy eating has on quality of life, lowering the risks of disease and promoting longevity. The Brookside Farmer’s Market, which has its winter home on the Research Medical Center Brookside Campus, is one of Kansas City’s most-frequented markets, featuring produce from local growers and artisan products from local makers.
“Research Medical Center is honored to host the Winter Brookside Farmer’s Market, allowing the community to have access to fresh, local products throughout the cold months,” says Research Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Jackie DeSouza. “This is one important part of our community outreach, to help educate people about the benefits of maintaining a healthy diet.”

Research Medical Center dietitian Alysse Anderegg, RD, LD, will be on hand at the March 3 market to discuss preventive healthcare and how fresh food can help lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, among others.
“In many cases, food at the farmer’s market is more affordable and tastes better than what’s available at a grocery store,” Anderegg says. “It’s locally grown, naturally ripened and, let’s face it, taste is a primary factor when we choose our food. I encourage patients to consider shopping venues, like the Brookside Farmer’s Market, for ingredients to prepare meals that are healthy and nutritious. Healthy eating, combined with exercise and regular visits to a primary care physician, positively impact an individual’s health.”
