Overland Park Regional Medical Center and nine of its board-certified gynecologic and uro-gynecologic surgeons have been recognized as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL and Surgical Review Corporation. To deliver on its vision of advancing minimally invasive gynecology worldwide, the AAGL— the leading association promoting minimally invasive gynecologic surgery among surgeons worldwide—partnered with Surgical Review Corporation to develop the COEMIG program as a quality improvement initiative.
Overland Park Regional Medical Center’s COEMIG board-certified surgeons and physicians include Errick Arroyo, M.D., Medical Director; OPRMC COEMIG Program, Charles “Chip” Butrick, M.D.; Renee Belieu, M.D.; Anthony Heit, M.D.; Timothy Martin, M.D.; R. Tony Moulton, D.O.; Amy Sorrells, M.D.; Sandra Stites, M.D.; Rabiya Suleman, M.D. and Kristi Weaver, D.O.
“Gone are the days when gynecologic surgery meant a long abdominal incision and a lengthy, painful recovery,” Dr. Arroyo says. “Today, modern, less invasive tools and techniques such as the daVinci® robotic-assisted surgery, have transformed treatment for many gynecologic conditions so that not only patients have a shorter recovery, but the safety and quality of care has vastly improved.”
According to Dr. Arroyo, the COEMIG program focuses on improving the safety and quality of gynecologic patient care and lowering the overall costs associated with successful treatment. COEMIG is designed to expand patient awareness of and access to minimally invasive gynecologic procedures performed by surgeons and facilities that have demonstrated excellence in these advanced techniques. The program recognizes that the integrated efforts and resources of both the surgeons and hospital are what provide lasting health benefits for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery patients. Designed to help accelerate the adoption of minimally invasive gynecology, the COEMIG program works to ensure that women are aware of their surgical treatment options and the benefits of less invasive approaches. To earn the COEMIG designation, Overland Park Regional Medical Center and its Board-certified physician leadership team demonstrated a cross-organizational commitment to minimally invasive gynecologic surgical care.
“Achieving this prestigious designation means that women in the region can now experience quality care that meets the AAGL’s strict standards of excellence,” says Kevin J. Hicks, Chief Executive Officer, Overland Park Regional Medical Center. “I am proud of the tireless efforts these nine surgeons and our staff have made to achieve the COEMIG gold standard of care, which aligns with Overland Park Regional Medical Center’s commitment to providing top-quality, compassionate care in all areas through advanced, highly specialized technology and services to patients and their families. It’s another way we raise the bar for healthcare in our community.”
