A surgical team at Menorah Medical Center recently performed Kansas City's first single-incision hysterectomy recently using the da Vinci® surgical system. Menorah Medical Center is part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City's largest healthcare network and private sector employer.
Menorah is a leader in single-site surgery on the da Vinci in the Kansas City area. The hospital has done more single-site gallbladder surgeries on the da Vinci than any other Johnson County hospital since first offering the procedure in September 2013.
Conventional laparoscopy and robotic surgery both offer the promise of less invasive surgery to treat both benign and cancerous gynecologic conditions.
These approaches, in which several small surgical incisions are made in the abdomen instead of one large incision, lead to faster recovery times, less pain and a better experience for women who need a hysterectomy or other gynecologic procedure.
"The single-site robotic platform allows surgeons to pair the dexterity, control and high-definition 3-D vision found in traditional robotic surgery, with the ability to perform the procedure through a single small incision in the navel," says Michael R. Magee, MD, board-certified OB/GYN specialist, part of the surgical team that performed the single-site hysterectomy at Menorah Medical Center.
Menorah's highly skilled da Vinci trained surgeons are dedicated to delivering the most advanced care with greater precision, control and access to hard-to-reach areas. During the procedure, the surgeon sits comfortably at a console, viewing a 3-D, high-definition image, of the patient's anatomy. da Vinci® allows extremely complex operations to be performed through one small incision, with minimal pain for the patient, less blood loss and reduced risk of infection.
"To be the first hospital in the region to offer this less-invasive surgical innovation for women - and among the first in the country - demonstrates Menorah Medical Center's commitment to providing our patients with the most advanced, minimally invasive surgical options," says Dr. Magee.
"Menorah's surgeons who are specially trained on the da Vinci provide state-of-the-art care for our patients," says Steven D. Wilkinson, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Menorah Medical Center. "The da Vinci technology offers women an exciting breakthrough in gynecologic surgical techniques. Menorah is proud to take the lead on this in Kansas City."
Controls below the da Vinci viewer move the surgical instrument arms and camera. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient. Individuals who have surgery with the assistance of the da Vinci® robot can experience both medical and cosmetic benefits, including potentially shorter recovery times than with traditional surgery. Many patients are able to return home the very same day.
At Menorah Medical Center, surgeons perform various types of robotic-assisted surgeries in addition to gynecologic surgeries, including surgical procedures for gallbladder, prostate, kidney, and urological and colorectal conditions.
