Herbert Dempsey, DO, Deanna Bailey and Aileen Beard of Lee's Summit Medical Center Receive 2012 Frist Humanitarian Award

The late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA

Herbert E. Dempsey, DO, employee Deanna Bailey and volunteer Aileen Beard were recently named the Lee’s Summit Medical Center Frist Humanitarian Award 2012 honorees.

The Frist Humanitarian Awards were created by HCA, the parent company of Lee’s Summit Medical Center, to recognize one volunteer, one employee and one physician at each HCA-affiliated facility who demonstrate daily dedication to care-giving for patients at the highest standard of quality and personal commitment.

The Frist Humanitarian Awards are given annually in recognition of the humanitarian spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA. The Lee’s Summit Medical Center recipients are eligible for the national Frist Humanitarian Award, the highest honor an employee, volunteer, or physician may earn. National 2012 recipients will be honored in May in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Dempsey has thousands of active patients who love him and request him personally. He says he wishes he could literally double his schedule every day so he could see every patient.

Beginning in 2005, Dr. Dempsey started researching solutions for his patients suffering from cramps. He isolated and compounded natural ingredients into a solution that helped these patients sleep through the night. In 2007 he took the product into a formulation and clinical trial phase. The product was test marketed on a larger scale for two years and in September 2012, CrampX was launched and has since become a nationally distributed product reaching retail markets, high schools, colleges and professional sports teams.Dr. Dempsey invested his own money without making a profit so he can continue to fund development and distribution because he knows CrampX helps thousands of people every day.

Dr. Dempsey never turns down volunteer and community work. He serves on several community boards, gets involved in political causes to help patients have access to quality health care and gives his personal time to administer free physical exams.

Dr. Dempsey takes pride in setting a healthy example to others by eating right and exercising. He also volunteers at community health events and schools.

Over the past 12 years, Aileen Beard has been an integral part of Lee’s Summit Medical Center where she has filled many roles and provided thousands of hours of volunteer service to the hospital. She uses her people skills to serve as Hospitality Ambassador and her organizational skills to coordinate the mail delivery. She has proven to be an invaluable resource to hospital staff.

Beard raised five children and has 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She raised her family on a farm, where she still lives today. She and her husband sponsored a chapter of 4-H out of their home for 20 years. Beard volunteers each week at her church’s soup kitchen and serves on the board of directors for its preschool and daycare. She also serves as a church elder and deacon.

At the end of 2012, Beard had accumulated 2,981 volunteer service hours for Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Above all else, she is committed to the care and improvement of all human life, which is reflected in her heart for service to others. Those who do the most say the least; that best describes Beard.

Bailey is the Sleep Lab Coordinator and has been employed at Lee’s Summit Medical Center since 2008. She was nominated because of her inspiring work ethic and her humanitarian efforts.

Bailey tirelessly supports hospital outreach projects including community education and patient education regarding sleep disorders. She has participated with Go Red and spoken at the Women’s Heart Health.

Bailey’s community service projects include organizing a scarf/hat/coat drive for the homeless of Kansas City, feeding the homeless under bridges, nursing home visits and food drives for Single Soldiers at Ft. Leavenworth. She has a lifelong commitment to service that started in California by being a practical emotional support volunteer for the Center for AIDS Services in Oakland, California.

Bailey also serves through Prison Ministry, Wounded Warriors and the USO. Her life revolves around serving friends, community and family members. She always puts others before herself and that is why she is so deserving of the Frist Humanitarian Award.

“We are extremely proud to recognize Dr. Dempsey, Aileen Beard and Deanna Bailey for their efforts on behalf of our patients and our community,” says Jackie DeSouza, President and CEO of Lee’s Summit Medical Center, part of HCA Midwest Health System. “Their exemplary work and compassion set a high standard for healthcare professionals. We’re proud to have them as part of our family. Our patients benefit from the kind of commitment they demonstrate each day.”
